Q: What inspired you to be an interior designer, and what made you want to start your own company?

A: I always wanted to be an interior designer, even when I was a kid. My parents built a home back in the 90's and I remember loving the process and wondering why they weren’t including me in it, ha! Once I graduated high school I decided to explore other options of schooling other than design but then quickly realized interior design was where I wanted to be. I started my own company 3 years ago after working for another company that I was with for the previous 12 years. I left them after having my 3rd baby. A year later I slowly started to work again taking on some smaller scale jobs and now here we are.

Q: When approaching an interior design project where do you get your inspiration?

A: I first try to understand the needs of the client but from there I love to draw inspo from travel and past experiences as well as my surroundings. I take a ton of pictures of anything and everything that catches my eye and try to apply it to my design. I use Pinterest as a tool to sort images and my thoughts.

Q: Has being a mom influenced your approach to interior design?

A: Parts of it have given more context to what I design if it’s something child related. For example I can see the more functional side of design.

Q: What are the best and worst things about running your own business?

A: Best thing about running my own business is the flexibility of taking the projects that speak to me most. It’s also wonderful being able to have the flexibility to make life with family and my professional life work together. Worst parts of running my own business are the numbers and paperwork.

Q: Running your own business and being a mom to 3 kids must get hectic! How do you try to balance your time?

A: I’m constantly trying to find the 'balance' but I recently heard someone else say they don’t think balance actually exists and I kind of agree. It’s never going to be perfect, sometimes kids will need you more, sometimes work will be more demanding. I am just trying to be present in the moment I am in. If I’m working, I’m working and when I’m with the kids and family I try my very best to not let work creep in. Its definitely kept me challenged and has not slowed down, so I do a lot of reflecting and reevaluating daily, weekly, or monthly. I usually acknowledge how I’m feeling by talking it out and then try to move on. I’m so lucky to have lots of help from my mom and friends. It takes a village!

Q: For any budding interior designers out there, do you have any advice about breaking into the industry?

A: Be ready to work hard because it’s definitely a time investment. Also, travel and take as many pictures as you can. I reference back on pictures from years back all the time to remember an idea. And be open to learning from others because there are always other ways to do things other than your own.

Q: If you could put a message up on a jumbotron at a sporting event, what would it say?

A: Breathe, Smile & Chill

Q: If you had to come up with the next biggest parenting app, what would it be?

A: An app that stops the whining…the struggle is real ;)
