Our GREIGE Faves blog is where we share some of our favourite people, places and things - approved by us, and our kids! As new parents, it can be hard to know where to turn for trusted resources. Our blog is a place to find tried and true books, blog posts, zero waste tips, recipes, and more! In April, we’re sharing one of our favourite books, an essential parenting podcast and a fantastic eco-friendly toy brand.
April’s Favourite Book: Dragonfly Kites by Tomson Highway
Dragonfly Kites, written in English and Cree, tells the story of two imaginative brothers, Joe and Cody, living in northern Manitoba. The brothers spend their summer exploring the great outdoors together. Their favourite activity is flying dragonfly kites. They catch dragonflies and gently tie a length of thread around the middle of each dragonfly before letting it go. The brothers run after the dragonfly kites through trees, meadows and the lakeshore. We love this book for its beautiful illustrations, rich imagery and the opportunity it provides to educate your little ones on the Cree language and culture in Canada. This book is for ages three to eight. If you like this story, the author has two more books in the Songs of the North Winds series following Joe and Cody’s adventures and many other adult fiction and non-fiction books. Consider purchasing the book from one of Canada’s Indigenous-owned bookstores such as Iron Dog Books, Massy Books or Strong Nations.
Liz Gumbinner and Kristen Chase are the authors of Cool Mom Picks and parents to six kids between the two of them. Their podcast, Spawned, hosts candid parenting culture discussions, non-judgemental tips, and a good dose of humour. They cover everything from helping your kids learn to read to racial injustice to how to have conversations about sex with your kids. Spawned was named a top podcast by The Washington Post, Mental Floss, Business Insider and Fatherly and won the 2016 Iris Award winner for best parenting podcast. A new podcast comes out weekly and can be found on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Their website, Cool Mom Picks, is also a great resource as a major lifestyle network for parents with advice on everything from health and wellness to fun holiday activity ideas.
